Soap Box Derby Cars at Twin City Idlers this Sunday, June 29th

Drivers, Family and Fans,
The Twin City Idlers Car Show is Sunday June 29th. We have moved all of the Soap Box Derby Cars to the Community Resource Center for the Car Show. This is a great opportunity to promote the Soap Box Derby and encourage new drivers and families to participate. It will also be an opportunity to attract new sponsors for the race. The car show is from 9 am –3 pm. We will have the cars on display from 9 am. If you borrowed a car  or drove a sponsored car please plan to come and disassemble  your car anytime after 12 noon. If you are not available in the afternoon we need some volunteers to carry the cars out of the Resource Center and set them up in the parking lot starting at 7 am. Drivers please wear your Soap Box Derby T-shirts and bring your trophies to display. If you left the race early this year and did not get your participation trophy you can pick it up Sunday! If you own your own car we would love to have it in the show. You can drop it off at the Resource Center anytime this week. Call me if Saturday works better for you and I can meet you at the Center.

Important Race Information

Drivers, Family and Fans
IMPORTANT RACE INFORMATION
The Drivers Banquet is Thursday June 12th from 6-8 pm at the Stanwood Camano Fair Grounds in the Bonnie Cole Building.
Drivers are free, family and fans $5.00, pay at the door. For those with Latex allergies please note that the decorations will include balloons. This is an important pre-race event. We will be discussing Race Rules and Protocols. There will be a demonstration of the wheel swap for car handlers and drivers. This is important information as you will be doing it many times on race day. Drivers will also receive their Goody Bags and their mandatory race day T-shirt. Race Officials will be on hand to answer your questions
Saturday is the big day. We are very excited that you will be joining us for the 7th Annual Windemere Stanwood Camano Island Soap Box Derby. Check in at the Drivers Tent as soon as you arrive.  Drivers must be at the race track at 7:30 for their final weight-in. Your cars will be transported to the track. The mandatory Driver Meeting starts at 8:30 am, Opening Ceremonies at 8:45 am. The race will start at 9 am and will end when all the cars are finished racing. The race track is at the Stanwood Senior Center 276th Street
The Stanwood Senior Center is having a Soap Box Derby Breakfast from 7:30am-10am. The cost is $5. You can take advantage of this after your weight-in
A free sack  lunch and free water throughout the day will be provided for the Drivers.
Boy Scout Troop 413 will be selling Derby Burgers throughout the day. This is a fundraiser for the Troop so please support them.
Bring your Canopy’s, blankets, coolers and umbrellas and plan to spend the day.
The three essential ingredients for a successful race are Safety, Sportsmanship and Fun. Drivers are responsible for knowing and following the rules. Please take the time to review the Soap Box Derby Rules prior to the race.
Parking is limited please plan to drop off your cars and equipment at the top of the hill and then park in the High School Parking lot and walk up the hill.
There are at least 10 people involved to get you and your car down and back up the hill. We could not do this race without all the hard work of the volunteers please take the time to thank them.  many of the event sponsors (listed on the race Program) will be onsite. Please take the opportunity to thank them for their Sponsorship. Drivers will be returning up the hill in return vehicles donated by Dwayne Lanes for the  day please thank the drivers and don’t slam the truck doors
Be Ready to Race at all times. Helmet on your head or in your car. Always be near your car. Listen for your name/number being called. Your name and number will be called three times. If you do not respond you may be disqualified from racing. Watch the person with the list at the top of the hill. Only Racers, Car handlers and Officials may touch cars.
Drivers Meeting at 8:30 am day of the race. Mandatory attendance for all Drivers & Car handlers to cover rules & safety and demo of the PROPER way to switch wheels
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Keep the track clear for racers and return vehicles. 240 lbs + 30 mph= BIG OWIE! Watch for the RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT
The Trophy Ceremony will begin after the race and clean up is finished. Please plan to stay for this exciting part of the day. Drivers will have an opportunity to choose the “Best in Show, car. The SBD Committee will be voting for the driver that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship for the Sportsmanship Award. Prior to and after the race shake hands with the driver you are racing against and wish them a safe race. Thank your parents, car handlers and sponsors.
Many Drivers and families agreed to do 4 hours of community service for the opportunity of driving a sponsored car. We will need help throughout the day. Please come to the Drivers Tent to get your volunteer assignments when you are available throughout the day. You will also have an opportunity to complete your community service requirement by participating in the Twin City Idlers Car Show on June 29th and in the Stanwood Camano parade on August 2nd.

Race Day Registration Forms are Due!

Drivers Family and Fans,
The Big Race is just one week off. Monday the 9th and Tuesday the 10th are our Final Inspection and Impound Days. Your Registration including your registration fee of $25 and a copy of your Birth Certificate must be turned in prior to your Final Inspection. Please contact me if you have questions or need to apply for a Scholarship to cover part of your Registration Fee.

Last Build Clinic, Thursday June 5th!

The last Build Clinic is Thursday June 5th 6-8 PM at Soap Box Derby Headquarters 7005 265th Street (Near Stanwood Cinemas in the vacant Ace Hardware Building). This is a great time to get your car shined up for the race. Rumor is the shinier the car is the faster it goes.
This is the last Build Clinic before final inspection and impound. Cars must be complete and ready to race at Final Inspection. All cars must have a new (never used) brake pad and a helmet at final inspection. If you need either of these you can get them at the Build Clinic. If you need extra help getting your car ready please contact me. I also need a Birth Certificate and completed registration form prior to Final Inspection.
Final Inspection appointments are being scheduled on Monday June 9th and Tuesday June 10th.  You can schedule your appointment at the Build Clinic or email me. Your car must be inspected and impounded to qualify to race.
Please RSVP for the Drivers Banquet by Thursday June 5th. The Drivers Banquet is Thursday June 12th from 6-8 pm. Drivers are free and family and fans are $5.00 pay at the Door. Drivers get their goody bags and race day T-shirts. We go over the rules and expectations for the day and it is an opportunity to meet the other drivers.

The Banquet will be at the Stanwood Camano Fair Grounds in the Bonnie Cole Building 6431 Pioneer Hwy.

Important Dates

Drivers, Family and Fans,
There will be a Drive Clinic Thursday May 29th from 6-8 PM. The location is Rekdal Road on Camano Island. Parking is available at Camano Dental located on HWY 532 and Rekdal Road. The Drive Clinic is for new Drivers and Drivers who are driving a Super Stock for the first time.
Important Dates
There is one Build Clinic left before Final Inspection and Impound on Thursday June 5th 6-8 pm.
Final Inspection and Impound is Monday June 9th and Tuesday June 10th 6 pm-9 pm. You must have a schedule appointment so please email me if you have not scheduled your appointment.
The Drivers Banquet is Thursday June 12th. At the banquet Drivers will learn about what to expect on race day. They will also receive a Goody Bag that will include their race day T-shirt. This is a fun time for drivers and families please plan to attend. Drivers are free, Family and Fans, $5.00 pay at the door.
Saturday June 14th is Race Day. We race rain or shine so come prepared with your sunscreen and umbrella and plan to spend the day. We will be racing from 9 am – 6 pm. Drivers will receive a free sack lunch. The Boy Scouts will be sell hamburgers and other goodies. Driver check-in is 7:30 –8:30 am. Mandatory Driver meeting at 8:45 am and racing starts at 9 am. The Senior Center is selling Breakfast onsite. You can come early to check in and then enjoy a great Breakfast before the race.
Sunday June 29th Twin City Idlers Car Show. All the cars will be transported to the Community Resource Center. We will have a Soap Box Derby Car Show in the Resource Center parking lot. We will be disassembling the cars that day. Drivers who are driving sponsored or borrowed cars are expected to attend and disassemble their cars for storage. If you own your own car please plan to bring it  to display for the car show. This will be a great opportunity to promote the Soap Box Derby.

5 Weeks Until Race Day!

Drivers and Families,
It is just 5 weeks until race day. We have just 3 Build Clinics left May 15th, 22nd & June 5th and one Drive Clinic on May 29th. No Build Clinic the night of the Drive Clinic May 29th. The Drive Clinic is for all new drivers and for drivers moving up to Super Stock for the first time. We will provide cars for the drivers to practice in so there is no need to bring your own car. Mandatory Final Inspection and Impound is Monday June 9th and Tuesday June 10th. The Soap Box Derby Drivers Banquet is Thursday June 12th. We will be ordering race day T-shirts on May 23rd. Please have your registration completed and turned in by that date so we can get your name on the T-shirt.
If you need extra help to get your car built please come to the Build Clinic this Thursday and talk to one of the Tech Team. They are there to help.
We still have Stock and Super Stock cars available if you know someone who would like to Drive.

Soap Box Derby Clinic, Thursday, April 24th.

The next Soap Box Derby Build Clinic is Thursday April 24th 6-8 pm at Soap Box Derby Headquarters. SBD Headquarters is in the old Ace Hardware building by the Stanwood Cinemas. The address is 7005 265th Street NW. We have several Super Stock Cars available for drivers ages 9-17. Please let your friends know if they would like to race. I also have two Stock cars available. If you have been assigned a car but have changed your mind about participating please let me know as soon as possible.
I have attached a copy of the plans for both the Stock and Super Stock cars. Please bring a copy of your cars building plans and the tools you need to work on your car with you to the clinic.

Next Build Clinic, April 17th, 6-8pm at Soap Box Derby Headquarters!

The Next Build Clinic is Thursday April 17th 6-8 pm at Soap Box Derby Headquarters. Please bring a copy of the building plans for the car you will be building and driving. I have attached the plans for both Stock and Super Stock cars and a copy of the rules that you can print out.
We have several cars available. If you know someone that would like to drive please invite them to the clinic or give them my email.
If you are an experienced driver and car builder we could use your expertise at the Build Clinics to help the many new drivers so please stop by.
